Snakes on a Plane: Applying Python Across Your GIS Infrastructure – Wednesday, October 1, 1:30PM-3:30pm, Workshop
Python was introduced as a scripting language in Esri desktop software nearly 15 years ago and has been extended through various components of the Esri ecosystem.
In this lecture, we’ll explore the practical and powerful ways Python scripting can be integrated across the Esri software ecosystem, with a focus tailored for intermediate users who are ready to deepen their automation and geoprocessing skills. We'll delve into the use of Python within ArcGIS Pro, with tips for integrating with ModelBuilder and managing tool parameters effectively.
We'll examine administrative scripting, using Python to streamline routine GIS management tasks such as bulk data updates, user and group management in Portal or ArcGIS Online, and scheduled automation with the ArcGIS API for Python.
Finally, we'll look at automating workflows in ArcGIS Online and Portal for ArcGIS, showcasing how Python can be used to manage content, perform data updates, generate reports, and monitor system health using REST API interactions and asynchronous scripting patterns.
Whether you're looking to optimize your daily workflows, build reusable geoprocessing tools, or manage enterprise GIS environments more efficiently, this session will provide practical examples, coding patterns, and best practices to help you make the most of Python in the Esri platform. While not hands-on, there will be technical exercises provided to attendees to take with them and practice the lessons learned!
