Congratulations to Pope County, MN and Jefferson County, WA on their Esri Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Awards! Presented at this week’s Esri User Conference in San Diego, the awards recognize the two counties’ vast accomplishments over the past year in implementing a modern enterprise GIS that is benefitting the entire organization and local citizens.
Pope County, MN
Pope County’s challenge was its size – the county has a population of just 11,000 – and a lack of in-house GIS expertise. However, it had a strong vision for the role of GIS in the organization, and recognized the value of integrating GIS to improve efficiency in business processes, manage information more effectively, and engage to a greater degree with the public. The County sought support from Pro-West to provide up-to-date GIS capabilities, strategic planning, and advice on effectively leveraging the county’s investment in GIS technology. With the support of on-site and remote services from Pro-West, Pope County succeeded in achieving its GIS goals, going far beyond the accomplishments of many much larger organizations. In just 9 months, Pope County implemented 21 GIS applications across 10 departments, transformed its spatial data management processes, and upgraded GIS infrastructure. Read more.
Jefferson County, WA
In contrast to Pope County, Jefferson has a dedicated GIS department but was suffering as a result of a once-successful GIS that had gradually become outdated and was starting to break. The 2008 recession had negatively impacted GIS investment at the County, and stagnation was an imminent threat. Re-evaluating the county’s Esri licensing arrangement opened doors, allowing departments and individuals across the organization to benefit and enabling a true enterprise GIS. Modern GIS technology replaced legacy systems, providing the foundation for land records transformation, easy-to-use internal and public apps, and the ability to use GIS to rapidly solve business problems.
